Fire & Water

Cremation at the ghats of The Pashupathinath Temple

On arriving in Kathmandu I headed to the ghats at Pashupathinath Temple . Dazed from my journey I found a quiet spot on the far steps and there before me unfolded this drama like a dream…
A body in orange was brought upon a stretcher and placed by the steps.
First it was taken down into the waters of the Bagmati River to be purified. Garlands and flowers were offered a fire was prepared then the body was placed on the wood for burning.
The eldest daughter (I assumed) walked three times around with burning grasses then set the fire alight.
It was tended and turned and in a few hours the last of the ashes were swept away into the river.
